Tooth Whitening/Bleaching

Tooth discoloration is caused by many factors. Some reasons could include aging, smoking, certain antibiotics, and staining from food like red wine, cola, tea or coffee.  The degree of whiteness that you get from using whitening agents varies from person to person depending on their enamel thickness, tooth structure, age and the type of stains on their teeth.

**Please note existing crowns, onlys, veneers and composite restorations will not change color, therefore many people pay to have restorations redone to match their new, whiter smile.

There are a few options for tooth whitening including a take-home whitening kit and/ or Zoom whitening. For the take-home whitening kit, we will take impressions of your teeth and make you a custom fit bleaching tray which will be worn overnight in your home or for periods throughout the day.

We also adminster the Zoom teeth whitening system. This procedure is performed within our office and the appointmet takes approximately 2 hours. During the procedure the dentist will apply a light-activated agent, which will effectively remove the stains on your teeth without harming them.

During the days you are bleaching and for 48 hours after you have completed the bleaching process, you should avoid consuming things that will stain your teeth. Things to avoid include coffee, red wine, tea, tobacco, and tomato sauces.

It is not uncommon to experience senstivity during and or after the whitening process and sensitivity usually subsides within 1-3 days. Brushing with desensitizing toothpaste three times a day should help reduce sensitivity.

**Please remember certain foods, smoking and some medications will stain your teeth and decrease the longevity of the whitening; home touch ups will help increase the longevity of the whitening.
