Porcelain Dental Veneers

Veneers are one of the most popular cosmetic dental procedures in dentistry and can benefit patients with a wide range of cosmetic issues. Our dentists have used them to transform the smiles of patients who have suffered from discolored teeth that do not respond to teeth whitening procedures, to close gaps between teeth, and to straighten or change the shape of crooked, worn down or damaged teeth.

Veneers are thin porcelain shells bonded to the front surface of teeth to improve the appearance of a person’s smile. The process of prepping veeners is much the same as for crowns. Since the porcelain shells require space, the teeth first need to be prepped to create room for the porcelain veneers to fit. Prepping or shaping of the teeth is more conservative than for crowns since it only involves the visible surface of the teeth.

Since the tooth must be shaped or prepped for veneers, our dentists will complete this in one visit, take a mold of the prepped teeth and apply temporary veneers while your porcelain veneers are being custom made by the dental lab.

Typically, two weeks after the prepping session, we’ll have you back in to the clinic to bond the porcelain veneers to your teeth. At that point you will see the full effect of your smile makeover!

Why consider dental veneers?

They are popular for many reasons. They offer some distinct advantages over other methods of restoring the appearance of your smile. Here are a few of the reasons our patients love them:

Porcelain reflects light in a way that is very similar to your natural teeth. This makes them look extremely natural.

Some dental restorations can irritate gum tissue or cause them to recede. Porcelain is easily accepted by the gum tissue, and of course, healthy looking gums are essential to a beautiful smile!

Since porcelain is stain resistant, you can continue to enjoy the foods and beverages you love. However, keep in mind that your new veneers still require the same amount of care that your natural teeth did. Cavities can still happen along the gum-line, so do not neglect your dental care habits and jeopardize your investment in your beautiful new smile.

If you do not have them placed on all the teeth visible in the smile line, you will still be able to match the veneer shade or color to your natural teeth.

Veneers can last 5-10 years or longer before needing to be replaced. You can take care of them just as you would take care of your natural teeth: brush and floss regularly and see our dental hygienist for regularly scheduled dental cleanings.

Dental veneers may or may not be for you. At our clinic, we will assess your teeth to see if you are a good candidate for them. Since we care about our patients, we want to make sure you fully understand the process before you make your decision.
